A sports fans delight!!! My Son did this grooms cake for a Vikings Fan! Its quite large and
has fudge filling, (YUMMY). Very detailed yet still a fairly simple cake to create.
Materials:
- 3x 14" FROZEN cakes
- Buttercream icing
- Fondant
- Airbrush
- wire
" wow this one is complicated to ice!"
Step Two:
Roll out a sufficient sheet of fondant
as you would to cover any cake. Make
sure it is thick enough to hold its
shape and smooth out easily. Cover
the cake, working slowly to smooth any
wrinkles as a helmet should be very
smooth. I find on items with an
overhang. It is best to remove the
excess in this area as soon as possible
with a sharp x-acto knife.
Here you can see the details of the ear
holes... They are simply pressed into
the cake by hand, gently forming the
bulge shape. The actual holes were
cut with a round cutter and then
pushed in to form the hole.
As you can imagine any sort of
helmet could be made this way,
Astronaut, race car, motorcycle, etc.
Step Four:
Finish this thing already!!!! The face mask for this cake was first formed from a wire coat hangar and wrapped
with rolled fondant... All the other details were formed from fondant as well. Painting something like this
requires a lot of fore thought. I made a mask in the shape of the horns and applied it to both sides before
painting the whole thing purple. Once it was purple we removed the mask and hand painted the details. Once
that is done all that is left is assembly. We also mixed up green buttercream in a bag for grass, cut strips from
fondant to create the helmet hardware and so on............
Thanks And Good Luck!!!!!
Step One:
Start with frozen cakes as they will carve without
crumbling, stack the two lower layers and the dowel them
to support the top. Notice the cardboard between the top
layer. It is very important to support this overhang, as it
will otherwise fall. Carve and shape the cake to a helmet
shape. Once shaped it is then iced and smoothed. Keep
in mind that if there is to be any details in the finished
product you should build a good "base" for it with icing...
