My son did this cake for his first competition.  He runs a hot rod shop
full time so a car was his obvious choice...  Mike does a lot of cakes for
me when I get busy, especially sculpture cakes, and we were even on
food network together.  He's never had any outside training , but claims
he "had to know how"  Just from watching me.   Since this is a show
cake I'll let you in on the basics but you'll have to figure the detail stuff
out for yourself!!
Step One:

Yes it's real cake!  Start by
shaping your cake into a "car".
Notice the front wheel wells are
carved out to accept the tires he
made from hand out of fondant
and dried.  The wheels are only
"halves" as not all of them would
show, or fit for that matter.
Step Two:

Ice it!!.  After the wheels are
installed in finished wells
of-course.

Note:  The grill opening was
also cut out so it would look
nice and deep after it was
finished
Step Three:

After a good sculpting of soft
icing was complete it was
covered in premium fondant.
You can see that some of the
fine details were simply
pressed into the fondant with
sculpting tools...  The rear
fenders were cut from a flat
sheet of fondant.  Some of the
wood work was hand grained
and other pieces were
overlaid after first painting the
back ground .
Step Four:

SHHHH!!!   Its a secret....

Oh not really, But since we
don't have alot of pics.  We'll
call it that.   Everything else
was carefully sculpted from
fondant.  He loves detail and
after  8 or 10 hours of doing
this cake.  We had to load up
and head to Tulsa
"Wow I actually
won!!!!"
